Get Fired Up About Reading!

Can you feel the heat?  Shelby-Rising City Elementary held the annual kick-off assembly for the Book-It! At-Home Reading Program on October 1.  This year’s theme is “Get Fired Up About Reading!”   Students were entertained by the SRC Spirit Squad and members of the Rising City and Shelby Volunteer Fire Departments.  Spirit Squad members led the volunteer fire firefighters in a "Fired-Up" dance and turned up the heat, challenging students to read each month.  The dancers did a wonderful job of building students’ excitement for fun reading and learning as they participate in this six-month reading program, which runs from October through March.  They demonstrated some smoking dance moves and spoke to the students about the importance of reading.  Husky also made an appearance and joined in the fun!

We greatly appreciate all of the dancers who volunteered their time and talent:

SRC Spirit Squad - Madisyn Jakub - coach and choreographer, Kaylei Perry, Ellie Frederick, Jenna Potter, Katelyn Nekl, and Emily Augustin

Rising City Volunteer Fire Department - Bob McLaughlin and Nate Sanley

Shelby Volunteer Fire Department - Jon Eller, Roger Smith, Cody Turpitt, Denise Humlicek

The parent volunteers helping with our program this year include:  Jen Vrbka, Rachel Siffring, Jenny Reppert, Christa Ruth, Crystal Zimmerman, and Kaylyn Pearson.  These volunteers help prepare our classroom posters, pizza certificates, and tally books and points each month.  Book-It! would be impossible to manage without their valuable behind-the-scenes help.  We love our volunteers!

Parents, you are so important to ensure your child’s success!  Your students are bringing home Book-It letters (red sheet) with all the important details.  Remember to read with and to your child regardless of his or her age.  Beginning readers love to show off their skills by reading easier books to their Mom, Dad, or other special family members.  Older readers can still read to the family too.  Enjoy time together as you explore books, newspapers, or magazines.  Talk with your child about what you’ve read together.  Just 15 minutes of reading and talking together can increase your child’s reading abilities.  Let's push for the extra degree!
